Learn how to built a professional-looking website from scratch using our step by step guide. Let’s dive right in!
Step 1. Register domain and select a hosting plan. So, let’s start with choosing a domain name. This is going to be your new web address, so give it some thoughts.
Once you have figured out your future web address, you can go ahead and register it.
Go to Bluehost.com and click on Domains.
You should also decide on a DNS zone. I recommend going with .com
Now when you have your domain name, you need to choose a hosting plan. Since you are a beginner, and just starting out, ”Get online” plan would be the optimal solution for you.
All Bluehost WordPress hosting plans include:
- automatic WordPress installation
- free domain name for 1 year
- automatic WordPress updates
- Microsoft Office 365 available
- get verified on Google My Business
Another reason you should choose Bluehost is that it’s WordPress.org’s #1 recommended web host.
Once you have registered your domain name and paid for hosting, you can move on to the second step, which is WordPress installation.
Step 2. WordPress installation. In order to proceed with installation, log in to your Bluehost account and click on ”Install WordPress” icon.
Click the green button ”Continue installation’’, then choose the domain name and click ”Next”. Then you will be asked to add the name of the website, your email address, your username and password. Once you have provided the information, click on ‘’Next’’ button and wait for WordPress for install to your website.
When installation is completed, click the ”View your credentials” button on the top right of your screen. This will give you your username and password. Next, click the ”Install Location” and log in using your WordPress credentials. Now you have a WordPress site!
Step 3. WordPress themes and plugins. Before picking a theme, you need to decide what kind of website you are creating. It can be, for example, portfolio website, Ecommerce website or a blog. WordPress theme can be either free or premium. You can change the theme later on if the present one does not meet your expectations any more.
To pick a theme, simply go to ”Appearance” section on your dashboard and click on ”Themes”.
Next you need to install and activate certain plugins. Plugins are used to extend functionality or add new fuatures to your wesbite. Just like WordPress themes, plugins can be either free or premium. Depending on your induvidual needs, a premium plugin may be your WordPress website smartest move.
Note: there are WordPress plugins that are recommended to install to any new site, be it a blog or a business website (for example WP Forms or Yoast SEO).
Step 4. Write your first blog post.
